Modelling non-specific linguistic variation in cognitive disorders

نویسندگان

چکیده

Clinical linguistic diversity extends far beyond ‘specific language’ disorders, such as acquired aphasia or specific language impairment (SLI), to a large range of mental disorders that are not language-specific. As cognitive impairments involved in the latter, models with an integrated approach and cognition can be useful for understanding classifying variation question. The aim this paper is specify model, called Bridge which views resting on two partially pre-linguistic pillars: (i) perceptual categorisation (ii) social-communicative interaction. Grammar acting bridge crossing between them mediates lexicalisation categories and, based these, new forms social interaction communication conveying thought structured by grammar. This model allows conceptualise different ways linguistic-cognitive phenotype deviate from its normal course. We illustrate our general instance within autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Functional and Cognitive Aspects in Linguistic Modelling

The paper focuses on the issues of establishing transferable language phrase structures. The approach employed is based on generalized cognitive entities manifested in the categorial systems of the English and Russian languages and functional roles of language units in a sentence. The formalism developed for presentation of syntactic structures for the English-Russian machine translation is a v...

A continuum approach to modelling cognitive disorders.

At the present time, the dominant conceptual framework in neuroscience views neurons as discrete information processing units. While this framework has undoubtedly been successful in explaining phenomena at the single-cell level, it has had less success in explaining large-scale neural phenomena such as cognitive disorders. An alternative conceptualization of brain function is in terms of an en...

The Role of Non-Linguistic Variables in Production of Complex Linguistic Structures by Hearing-Impaired Children

Objectives: Language development is often very slower in hearing impaired children compared with their normal peers. Hearing impairment during childhood affects all aspects of speech production and language acquisition. It seems that hearing impaired people suffer from language and speech impairments such as production of complex linguistic structures. The purpose of this study is to determine ...

Linguistic Variation and Computation

Language variationists study how languages vary along geographical or social lines or along lines of age and gender. Variationist data is available and challenging, in particular for DIALECTOLOGY, the study of geographical variation, which will be the focus of this paper, although we present approaches we expect to transfer smoothly to the study of variation correlating with other extralinguist...
